Kirby Kegel has been selected as the Kelly Educational Staffing® national Substitute Teacher of the Year for the 2016-2017 school year. Ms. Kegel was selected from among 50,000 Kelly substitute teachers across the U.S. Her recognition is based on her outstanding performance and exemplary service as a substitute teacher at the Lawrence County Career and Technical Center (LCCTC) in New Castle, Pennsylvania.

Ms. Kegel, a resident of Ellwood City, Pennsylvania, was first selected as the KES Substitute Teacher of the Year for the state of Pennsylvania. As a state winner, she then became eligible for the KES national award, the company’s highest honor, and was named the KES National Substitute Teacher of the Year in April.

“The contributions Ms. Kegel has made at the Lawrence County Career and Technical Center have not only enriched the learning environment, but have also nurtured student achievement,” said Scott Apsey, vice president for Kelly Educational Staffing. “Her dedication as a substitute teacher sets her apart and we are proud to recognize Ms. Kegel as our national Substitute Teacher of the Year.”

Having earned her master’s degree in business administration from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Ms. Kegel, is the mother of four children, a former merchandise buyer for a major hardware company, and a realtor. She started substitute teaching in 2015 at the suggestion of a friend, once her own children were grown.

Her first experience substitute teaching was in a district kindergarten class two years ago. She proceeded to teach in all grade levels until she was asked by Principal Milanovich to become a permanent building substitute teacher at Lawrence County Career and Technical Center teaching vocational and academic classes. Of her position there Ms. Kegel says, “I felt a gravitational pull on my heart at LCCTC. It feels like a family from the students, to the faculty, to everyone who works here.” Ms. Kegel teaches in whatever classroom needs her, whether it’s auto, computer and office, or machine tool technology, commercial art or masonry class. She truly enjoys the feeling of being able to give back to students and make a connection with them.

On working through Kelly Educational Staffing, Ms. Kegel states, “From my very first interaction, I was impressed with the knowledge of the staff, the available online training courses, and the ease of scheduling of assignments through the call center.” She adds, “If I ever have a question, the local Kelly team is wonderful in providing support.”

Ms. Kegel was recognized at a student assembly on Monday, May 22nd, at the Lawrence County Career and Technical Center, a technical education center in New Castle in front of nearly 400 school administrators, students, friends and family. Included in the audience was Leonard Rich, superintendent, LCCTC and Laurel School District; Michael Milanovich, principal, LCCTC; Melissa King, territory vice president, Pittsburgh, Kelly Services; David Stieving, strategic sales manager, Kelly Educational Staffing; Karen Houseman, branch manager, Pittsburgh, Kelly Educational Staffing; and Shannon Fenton, staffing supervisor, Pittsburgh, Kelly Educational Staffing. Additionally, Ms. Kegel’s husband, Scott, her four children, a brother and nephew, were also in attendance. As part of her state and national award, Ms. Kegel received a $1,100 bonus award and an additional $1,000 check to donate to the school from KES.
